In Coronavirus identification, PCR testing is considered the "gold standard." Actually, this test detects RNA (or genetic material) that is unique to the virus and can identify the virus, including for asymptomatic patients, within days of infection.
Depending on the test, a machine placed in a standard laboratory or a POC setting runs a sequence of reactions in PCR testing. Such reactions first convert the ribonucleic acid (RNA) of the virus into deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA), if present, and then amplify it (make millions of DNA copies); this DNA is then detected by the test.
